How Choosing Myself Instead of a Niche Worked Out for Me
The narrative of picking a niche and solving a problem isn't something I teach because it's not how my business was born and it's not what excites me.
I started with me. In 2012, I decided one day to take 100% responsibility for my life..
I made myself a planner and I called it The Ultimate Life Binder and it became my constant companion.
I carried it with me everywhere - to coffee shops, to housecleaning jobs, to nanny gigs. It reminded me that I was going somewhere with my life - that my eyes were open.
People started asking me if I could help them make their own Life Binder so that they could take charge of their lives too.
I thought, "This is so easy, anyone can do it. Why do you need my help?"
But I would still meet up with people and show them how to put their binder together.
I also started a blog called The Secret OWL Society. It wasn't to serve a niche or establish myself as an expert. It was just to share my journey in how I was taking 100% responsibility for my life.
I shared photos of my Life Binder on my blog and then people I didn't know started asking me, "Can you make this so that we can buy it from you?"
I still thought, "This is so easy, anyone can do it."
It wasn't until 2015 when I booked a call with a Yogi (sounds made up, I know) and told him how I wanted to have a business that lets me have a healthy life. He told me to focus more on selling products. That was the year I launched my Ultimate Life Binder in my Etsy store.
That Ultimate Life Binder turned into Passive Income with Printables in 2017. Aimee Johanan was one of my first students. Aimee and I partnered up to evolve Passive Income with Printables into Passive Income Planner Girl in 2020.
That Ultimate Life Binder turned into a digital version that I started using for myself in 2018. That digital version turned into the Digital Planner Template Kit in 2020.
That Ultimate Life Binder turned into The S.O.S. Club in 2015 - a monthly subscription for printables to enhance the Ultimate Life Binder. The S.O.S. Club turned into a group coaching program in 2019 and was renamed "The Magic is You" in 2020.
If you reverse engineer my journey, you can say that I identified my audience and solved a problem for them. But that is not what got me here.
Serving my own needs came first.
Solving my own problems came first.
Doing what brought me joy came first.
The most powerful thing I have learned as a woman in business is that when a woman puts herself first, she puts everyone first.
When a woman puts herself last, nothing truly works.
If there's a narrative in the online business world that feeds off the programming that you don't get to put yourself first, drop it.
If it's not serving you, drop it.
If it's not giving you joy, drop it.
If it's heavy, drop it.
